OK I bought this for convinience, was fooled by the price. Working it on the network was not easy, it was not visible on the network from the start. Maybe there is something wrong with the drive. I mean it happens now and then, after all, I do know what I am doing around my network.
So I went go a replacement. After hours working on it, 3 of them with buffalo tech so called tech support on the phone, my frustration boiled up. If you want an external drive, by all means good and dandy, if you want it networked like it is advertised, go somewhere else. I ended up building a NAS server. Save yourself the headache.

Not the standard firewire cable, so can’t be daisy chained. will require you to buy a new cable. Buy another drive.

You need to format this drive to NTFS if you are running windows Vista or later. The Disc Formater software that comes built into this drive is very confusing, and I ended up losing the partion that contains driver software. I still have not been able to restore this partion to the formated hardive.

This firewire drive and the USB version HDC-CX1.0TU2
[...]
can be reformatted to work with MAC easily. When mounted and idle, the drive keeps seeking and made quite a loud noise from about 3 foot distance. I had other external drive before and it’s never been this loud. The spotlight has already been disabled for this drive but it does not make any different. If you unmounted the drive though, it is almost silent.
The memeo software included is not free. You can use it for only 1 month. I did not find registration key or anything like that in the box.
I returned this one mainly because of noise.

It does what it says it will do. And that is huge today with the way ads are exaggerated and plain false. Really good backup device, you ought to have one, ’cause you know what happens to computers, and then all is lost. 4 stars because nothing’s perfect.
