Order arrived in a timely manner, assembly was not all that difficult, took about and hour. I have used the unit for three times in six months. The first time was in un-tilled sod. It was tough work with many stops to unclog, dug a garden only about 10 x 20. The second time was a re-tilling of the same area plus and additional 8 x20 area. The machine would stop running and would restart after a 5 to 30 second delay. My first thought was a bad switch in the handle, or a loose wire as there was no rhyme or reason for it to stop. I struggled thru to the tilling and contacted mantis via email, they had no record of the purchase. Yesterday I used the machine to re-till the garden area, it immediately started the shut off routine. I disassembled the switch in the handle and found all the connections were properly connected. Reassembling the handle I proceed to use the machine in its hit and miss run attitude. I switched power sources and the problem continued.

CURRENTLY, MAY 5 2009 I HAVE NO TILLER AND NO REFUND. SCHILLER GROUND / MANTIS HAD ME TAKE THE UNIT TO A AUTHORIZED REPAIR SHOP WHERE IT SAT FOR A MONTH OR SO, WHILE ALL I GOT WAS LIED TO. FINALLY, EXASPERATED I PICKED IT UP UNREPAIRED AND SCHILLER SAID SEND IT BACK, WHICH I DID. THAT WAS ABOUT 3 OR 4 WEEKS AGO AND I AM STILL WAITING ON A REFUND. FORTUNATELY I KEPT THE COPIES OF ALL THE EMAILS THAT WENT BACK AND FORTH.

I HAVE EVEN OFFERED TO BUY THEIR MORE POWERFUL 4 CYCLE GAS MODEL, BUT THEY SAY THEY MUST SEND A CHECK…. UNFORTUNATELY THEY HAVE FAILED TO DO EVEN THAT.

So if after reading this review you purchase one of these boat-anchors, please let me know, I have bridge in Brooklyn I need to sell.

The electric tiller — a basically good machine — uses an under-rated DC motor with an under-rated rectifier (AC to DC converter)(should be ~25-30A vs 10A) with no electrolytic capacitor on the DC (output) side of the rectifier to reduce motor brush arcing. The motor overheats far too easily. The shroud is not opened enough to allow air in, nor is there a motor shaft fan to circulate it. Motor casing cooling fins might help. These factors, in part, cause the duty cycle to be about 30′, even on a 60 degree day, which then drops to 2′ cycles until the motor cools for more than an hour. Incidentally, the “support” people at Mantis, when queried, did not know what the term “duty cycle” means. Other than these factors, when the machine “wants to work,” it does a good job. Too bad it doesn’t have a good 1/2 HP AC motor with good cooling instead of the DC drive.

THE TILLER DIED ON THE SECOND DAY. I COULD NOT COMPLETE TILLING MY NEW BACKYARD THAT IS ONLY 12′ WIDE X 25′ LONG!!!! YOU HAVE TO DE-WEED AND MOW AND PULL OUT AS MUCH GRASS AS YOU CAN BEOFRE USING THE TILLER TO BEGIN WITH.

IT IS NOT A CHEAP MACHINE EITHER – SO I WOULD SAY IT IS EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING, AS NOW MY YARD IS NOT FINISHED AND THE TILLER IS JUST SITTING ON THE BACK PORCH USELESS.

Plenty of power to break up sandy sod. Light enough to carry in one hand. Motor is starting to twist, just as the gas engine did on my previous Mantis tiller. But at least it runs — my gas engine wore out from problems getting the right amount of oil in the 2-cycle gas mix.
